Smile My boys (:

Here are the youngsters, it's been two weeks and a day since Bentley's passing, and I'm happy to see these guys are doing well.

They're around 4 or 5 weeks old, eating solids, running around like crazy!

The bigger, beige one, Ratpudge (Pudge) is extremely playful and affectionate, he also gets his feelings hurt easily. He'll curl up against my neck or lick my face, sometimes we play tag with my hand, and just yesterday when I tried to trim the sharp tip off his nails, he got very upset with me and ignored me for several minutes (but forgave me soon enough!) so any suggestions for other ways to keep their nails at bay? they hate to hold still, I've tried a file and clippers, done correctly mind you!

The smaller one with splotches, Ralphie, is calmer and likes to explore, he's definitely a sweetie, but more shy than Pudge.

Questions=

1.When are males grown to their full size?

2.When do they calm down typically?

3.Will I be able to trim their nails later on?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the first two answers as I haven't brought my own boys home. I'd say its safe to say 7 months for sure as that's when they hit sexual maturity?

But nail trimming may or may not always be a little ticklish. I've seen different techniques to getting the deed done though, usually involving one person holding the rat and bribing with yogurt while the other person quickly snips with a baby nail clipper. Like giving a bath, some are fine with it, and some always scream bloody murder.

Someone suggested getting a brick or rough flat stone and placing it under their water bottle or at their cage door where they will frequently walk over it. I got a flat paving stone from Home Depot. This apparently trims their nails naturally.

Storyseeker is right: My boys are turning 7 months tomorrow, and they are finally calming down, so expect them to be pretty energetic at least until then. My boys both weigh about 1.4 pounds at this point, and they are about 9 inches long (just their bodies), with tails about 8 inches long.

A rock is a good idea for keeping nail growth to a minimum--I also have a flat paving stone brick from Home Depot, and since I've had it in the cage (right in front of the cage door, on the inside) their nails have been much better.

there very lovely boys, males around that age calm down some of my males seem to be mellow ealeir and some are just hyper out going males. Although all rats are diffrent.
A rock or brick works well. I have only had to trip my older ones nails but those 2 work well. you could check on line or at the pet stores to see what eals you can use you keep their nails trimed.

I cut my rat's nails no problem with my own nail clipper that I use on my own nails, she eeps like i'm killing her everytime I cut, but she's just a drama queen
It's just getting them used to it I think, but I think filing the nails with a file may be easier and safer than with clippers!
.
I think they reach their full size at about 4 or 5 months old.
.
Also, you had them so tiny, are you certain they're boys?

Their dads were really big! So I guess I still have a while until they reach that point.
I'll try the brick thing, because my little cousin like to hold them and I'm afraid they might scratch her. I go nowhere near the quick and the scream like I'm cutting their foot off, so there's no winning with those little guys haha.

Two more questions:
1. are marshmallows safe? I gave a teeny little crumb to each and they LOVED it.

2. Pudge is so pretty but he has a spot on his back that would eliminate him from a lot of catagories. What could he compete in with that?

Thanks for all your help (:

Rat Property Laws
1. If I like it, it's mine.
2. If I've peed on it, it's mine.
3. If I can take it from you, it's mine.
4. If I had it a little while ago, it's mine.
5. If you've got something larger, it's mine.
6. If I'm chewing something up, all the pieces are mine.
7. If it's in my reach, it's mine.
8. If I saw it first, it's mine.
9. If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine.
10. If it's broken or it tastes bad, it's yours.....

Marshmallows have a lot of sugar so if you do it would have to be a VERy small treat.
Very cute little men

When you say catagories you mean show right? you can show any rat but their is a pet class and a show class and most if not all people there will help you if you dont know. All you have to do is ask them or someone their. Also diffrent clubs you join have diffrnet standards. I follow the AFRMA as in their standards and rules and guide lines and all. but there is more and I have read other clubs and some differ slightly but not much.
So its more less up to the club and more then like I would say he is pet class. but that is just my OP. Lovely rat though I love all rats show coat or colores as in points or not they are all # 1 in my book.
Although the flash is brigh your other looks like a nice cap and able to show is show class. can you take a picture with out so much flash so i can see better?
