Leo, yea people do that all the time. In another thread there were 30 or so rats that lived under a bridge. It took rescue workers days to get them all. They were released and just kept breeding
Someone probably had a rat that was pregnant and released the babies after they realized that they couldn't find homes for them. I think it's sad.

Unfortunatly it does happen. And it happened in a case involving me too.I never put a rat out,but this guy came to me and asked me if I could take his rat. This was during the summer.I told him I didn't really have the room.So he threatened to put it out in the wild.I didn't want that,so I told him to bring the rat over and I would give her a home. The a-hole (sorry...mods ) put the rat outside for spite.Well he happened to release her by my house and for days I fed the rat outside. She stayed under the house and wouldn't come out much, because the poor thing was traumatized.I was gonna get a humane trap and catch her.Well I noticed my landlord was digging out holes and putting poison in them and of course I was horrified.Next thing I knew,a neighbour came to me and asked if I lost a rat and she told me she found a dying rat that didn't look wild.Well I never seen the rat again, but I am assuming that was her that was poisoned. All this because the idiot wanted to be smart and throw her away for spite. It makes me MAD thinking about it.That poor rat.

Domestic rats MAY be able to adapt...but in most cases not. They either get poisoned as in the case of my rat (well she was spose to be mine ) or attacked by a predator or killed in other ways. They don't know how to survive the wild,as wild rats do.

Sadly people do that with alot of Domestic animals, Rats, mice, hamsters, Rabbits, birds, cats, dogs, snakes, lizards, even fish. its sad that people cant understand that these animals dont belong in the wild anymore.. they think well they had to come from somewhere.. its sad really.

Here's a fun link, I only post it because there seem to be some interesting color combos that seem to look similar to her (mocha, towards the bottom?? I don't know much about pet rats). Whatever her technical name is, she's beautiful!
