Rat mucous is naturally red and is called porphyrin. They tend to get it around their eyes and nose when they are sick or stressed. Since you just got them, it is probably just stress. Is it a lot or just a little? Try not to worry too much. While it's not a good thing, it's most likely nothing to freak out about.

Yeah, that's just a sign of stress. A little sniffle and a gunky eye is pretty common for the first couple of days and it should clear up on it's own. For now you could take a wet paper towel and gently wipe the gunk off his eye. Keep an eye on it and let us know if it gets any worse.

Yes,as mentioned it is normal for the first day or so.
They are stressed because they are in a new enviroment.
It is called porphyrin and is what rats get when they are ill or stressed out.

That will just come with time. Talk to them a lot in their cage so they can get used to your voice. Give them treats, especially when you take them out, and they will learn that coming out means great things.

A great technique for bonding is to put on a sweatshirt and just shove them inside it (between your shirt and the sweatshirt). They will feel safer being enclosed and they will be really close to you and get used to your smell, etc. Just as a tip: don't wear anything you treasure when you do this, as they might pee/nibble on it.
