well, give them time to get used to you and your new home. they may crouch down when you touch them because they just didn't get enough touching at the pet store. they also may be acting submissive towards you and await the touching happily. my timmy does this and sometimes he even wags his tail! the sneezing i've noticed is just something rats do. watch for poryphorin (red mucous) which means illness which means vet. what kind of bedding are you using? i only ask because pine and cedar REALLY aggravate their breathing and sneezing. as for cleaning themselves.....well they're clean freaks, they all clean like crazy lol

one of them doesnt really take treats off me he just sniffs it lol
eemm kitty litter its the pellets the guy at the petstore told me its fine
and also SOFTTTT paper towel beding for there wee box
they also try to get back into there cage when i lift them out
so i always put them back in because im scared of upsetting them .
how long would it normally take until they would want to come out and come over to you thanks again !

ratties are hearty animals, just hug them and play on your bed and they'll warm up to you. i shove mine in my sweater (while im wearing it) and they learn your body and bond quicker

they're only scared because you're unfamiliar. but just like another rat, you must teach them that you're a safe person. like a new puppy, play hug and love it and it'll come around

You just got them,so they are a little nervous,as they do not know you or their surroundings yet.Talk to them and let them get used to your scent. They will come around.

Sneezing is normal when you first get a rat.Rats tend to sneeze in new surroundings, but watch for discharge or odd breathing.

And yes, rats clean themselves all the time!

The pellets I am assuming is Yesterdays News, which is safe.I use that, but I often mix it with aspen.

What are you naming them?

Claire, I love their names! My rat is so funny, I don't pick her up alot, her main entertainment is playing with my 7 cats! Yep! She loves to entertain my cats! But she is so sweet. She knows my voice when I go each night to hand out treats to her and my little Degu girls. She is out right away with her hands out waiting. It is adorable. Once she grabs her treat, away she goes. It's cute to watch. Good luck with your new babies, I know you will love them.

I agree with what everyone else has said. They are new to your place and will probably be a little nervious. Each time you get them out of the cage they will probably explore a bit further each time. They will also need time to get used to the new sights, smells, people and in general the atmosphere around them, mine were a little like this at first, but get on fine now, have great fun with your ratties!!

Claire, I don't know much about rats, because I have always just had one. But I know that my little Degus have their little hissy fights one minute to where they are yelling at each other and slapping each other silly (literally!), they are true sisters! LOL, and the next minute they are all cuddled up talking sweet to each other and then sound asleep. Maybe it is some nighty nite ritual they go through. Hee Hee. As long as I don't see blood, I don't worry.
