I've always found males to be more personable, but in my opinion, I don't think there is a huge difference - its more how you raise them than gender that makes a good pet rat.

I feel exactly the same as Rav. I would choose males myself, but they all make great pets

I raise Rats and it really doesn't matter.Males are sweet and so are females. My 12 years old son has a female and she will get out of her cages and climb in bed with him. It is a shock to wake him up and she be snuggled up to his neck.....lol. But they are great pets and lots of fun to watch.

I had all male rats -6 at one time, no complaints about personality~ they were all very nice , but when they reached adult hood they all peed on me when I held them. It was a diffinate downfall , maybe females won't do that. Just a suggesion.

In my experiance the males tend to get "leaky" as they get older and the females were more prone to tumors. Those are the only real downsides to rats as pets I think. Well, their short lifespan is kind of sad too.

Well I have two girls and they pee on everything too. I have never had a male but I don't think they could be any worse than my girls are!
I have read that males are more snuggly and females are more into everything which I can vouch for because my girls love to explore everything. Only twice in one night has Maisy fallen asleep while out of the cage.

~Angela and the group~
Oscar~ Male Crested Gecko
Burt~ Male Leopard Gecko
Ernie~ Male Leopard Gecko
Candy~ Female Ball Python
Gidget~ Female Leopard Gecko
Paige~ Female Cholcolate Chihuahua
Marley~ Female Harlequin Great Dane

my boys are great. i have the boy rats and mom has the females. and my rats are lot tamer than moms. mine listen alot better too. i recomend boys over girls. my boys dont really get very leaky altough there are females in the same room with them. i just couldnt imagine being without my boys. i havent had much luck with rats in the past due to tumors and abcess but with this bunch i have been really lucky and greatful to have perfectly healthy boys

I was curious as to if you went ahead and got two girls? I have to add that having had rats for years and years it depends on what you want from your pet...if you are looking for a lap rat, I would say get boys. If you want a more active playful rat I would say girls.

Though females are nice, i prefere male rats, more cuddly and relaxed in my experience.

Good luck with the girls if you got them.

LOL, forgive me but I prefer female rats for "obvious" reasons.
