Questions about cages and breeders

I really don't want to get a cage for my future rat online. i just hate shipping charges and waiting and all that. I'd really like to see something like that in person. I am kinda flustered on what to get at a pet shop. I am budgeted ok, up to 60 bucks maybe more, and want something good, airy, large enough. Any suggestions?

Also, I live in Tennessee but the breeders I see when searching online are too far for me, near Knoxville and such. I live in Springfield. Maybe someone knows someone with weened babies or has any that can get to Rivergate mall area? I am kinda shy about asking but I wanted to check. Otherwise I don't mind getting a pet shop rat.

Thank you!

Can't seem to edit the first post. I want to add to what I typed. I looked around at the other threads and saw some great cages and have a better idea of what the cage should look like at least. I will just have to shop around. Thanks

I know of a good rat breeder in Nashville. They breed dumbos and dumbo rexes. If you are interested. Our website isn't up yet but non great photos will be coming later today. Er, Uh I mean their. LOL. We currently have 20 of the cutest dumbos you ever did see from some of the sweetest healthiest ratties you will ever see.

I will second what my husband said. We have excellent babies right now. They are brown and whites and black and whites, all with great dumbo ears and strong genetics. They should be ready to go in about 4.5 weeks, and Nashville's not too far from Springfield.

I've already become interested in two of them. The bareback with a weird hood pattern and the one right below it. I can't decide on either. But really I don't mind which one at all!

Well, rats are very social so you do need to have at least a pair. Superpet makes this cage now you can get for about $100. It comes with a wheel and everything.

Well, I went to petsmart to get some supplies and I fell in love with a blue girl I was surprised but it was one of those things. She picked me! I always wanted another male but there is just something about her. I will post pics later. Thank you all for your help.

petco makes a new rat manor that I've heard good things about. It seems to be in your price range.

I did find a temporary cage for about 10 bucks. It was on sale and the original tag says 39.99. lol. I am going to check out some of these large "manor" cages. Thanks pinkie

Sometimes it pays to think outside the box on the whole cage thing. Rats should really be kept in twos for socialization and two active female rats need a lot of space so the cages designed for rats are sometimes too small. the ones that are big enough are often too expensive. Make sure you check the paper, freecycle, ebay, etc. People will sell old cages. A bird cage will work with levels added and the doors wired shut, a large aquarium will work with the purchase of a tank topper, a ferret cage will work with some chicken wire or mesh wrapped around so that the bar spacing isn't too big etc. There are a lot of ways to save money on caging.
