Are rats wheel runners?

Well. Are they? lol because mookie's always had a wheel and he doesn't care for it, i just crawls under it.

Seems like some are and some aren't LOl I hear the younger you start with a wheel, the more they will probably like it. Make sure you don't get a wire wheel though, it can really hurt their tails!

Give them a wheel when they are young and most of them will figure it out. Older rats (under a year) can figure it out on their own as well.

If you can get your rat on the wheel and they stay running past adolescence you have a healthier, active rat who will run all their lives.

I've heard rats don't run on wheels because they realize they aren't getting anywhere. I noticed if my hamster gets freaked he'll take a run on his wheel...he probably thinks he has an endless cage

Actually the hand over hand thing with hamsters will annoy a rat, since they aren't getting anywhere, but running in a wheel is like running on a treadmill...just the joy of the exercise.

Some rats just do not like the wheel.

I don't use a wheel with my rats, because I just let them free range and they rather run, climb and do all that stuff.I have never used a wheel with rats and I have had rats for years.I recently looked into getting one to use during free range time, but haven't found a good deal on a good one.I say my females might like it,but the males prolly would care less.

Just leave the wheel there,Mookie might take a liking to it and he might not.

I've never had one that actually used it. Even the foster babies (27 at once!!!) didn't use it lol.

Wow! I have let me see...34 rats here, and 3 who use it in the Baby Cage, 2 in the Wildthings, and 6 in the Horde (altho 2-3 more of them take a walk, but they aren't real runners)...so 11 out of 34 is almost 33 %.

I do use the Superpet 11" Mesh Wheels tho, I wonder if that makes a difference?

I don't think hedgies use wheels...they are meant for low to the ground activities.
