ratty tail wagging?

hi everyone! so my lazy boy Gus (hairless rat) was snoozing on my lap this evening while I scratched his head. he was bruxing as usual, and then all of the sudden his tail started wiggling around! I have heard of rats doing that when they are angry, but I never seen it happen at all in a dozen rats I've cared for...does anyone know if rats "wag" their tails for other reasons? when I stopped petting him, he stopped wagging and bruxing and came looking for more as usual...so I am positive he was not angry. any ideas?

I had one rat that did that. My old double rex boy would waggle his tail when I was petting him. I don't know why he did it but, like you, I'm sure he wasn't agitated.

I read somewhere that it can mean alot of things;
Excited: If they are out running around and are ready to play fight.
Happy: Just sitting getting petted and scratched.
Angry: As in wanting to fight or is scared.

My old boy toto(RIP) used to do that when he was play fighting with his brother just before they were to pounce on eachother.
And my novo now does it when hes happy and getting petted and talked to.

thanks everyone...glad to hear that other people have seen it in happy rats! guess it's another ratty mystery, like how they always know exactly which pieces of paper are homework, and so much be chewed up immediately

It don't seem to be very common,but I have seen it a couple of times.I have seen it when picking up a rat that didn't wanna be handled (obviously agitated) and I have seen it in rats appearing very content.
