Unhappy Scooter is sick

So my little Scooty-Booty is sick and it's more serious than I thought. He's had a chronic URI and is on long term meds for it (Baytril/Doxy). Recently he's had more labored breathing so last night I took him to the vet to see if we needed to try a new antibiotic.

The vet said he did not sound terribly congested and she could only hear his heart on one side of his chest. So they did an xray and his lungs are pretty inflamed. He has very little usable lung space left, and really only on one side. We're continuing with the same antibiotics and also added a steroid (Prednisone) to try and reduce the swelling. He's had two doses of it so far, and soon I'll give him his third. He still looks pretty bad, though, perhaps worse... I feel SO bad for him. There was no fluid or anything in the lungs.

I don't know what this is from and I'm just hoping the medicine will help. I'm taking him back in tomorrow if he doesn't look better. I don't know what else we can do but I have to try.

Maureen

Poor old Scooter. Chronic resp. rats are soo difficult. The pred may help by reducing the inflammation in his lungs enabling him to breathe better and be more comfortable. You could try baytril/zithro as a change up, it can work amazingly well when you have given up.

He probably has lung/pulmonary abscesses...

((hugs))

Yes! We saw some white spots on the xray and the doctor said it could be abscesses. Poor little man.

I had him put down tonight. We went back to the vet because he was looking so bad. Struggling for breaths, just laying around, not eating, and he felt so cold to the touch. He lost almost 20 grams in 2 days. The vet said there wasn't really much we could do. We could try a couple of things but they might do as much damage as good, and probably wouldn't help at all. She gave me some options but really his prognosis was very poor. He only had 1/8 of his lung use left and she couldn't hear his heart at all. He wasn't even a year and a half old.

It's so sad. I've lost 3 rats in 3 months. A year ago I had 6 rats, now I'm down to only 1!

Hugs my love. I know we aren't exactly there to help in any practical way, but please let us know if we can do anything for you! I've been thinking of you all this week. A prayer for you tonight.
