Tail wagging rat??

So I was laying in the bathroom floor reading a book while the big ghost boys played. Tucker climbed on my chest to explore and I absently started stroking my hand down his back from nose to tail as I often do. Tucker and Jeffrey are the cooler tempered of my rats, and have never been quick to seek out affection until the younger kids arrived. This time when I pet Tucker, he crouched down briefly and his tail started doing this whip like twitching spastic motion, kind of like a snake does after it dies. It started thumpity thumping on my stomach.

What in the world?

Ahhh! Our boys used to do that sometimes! Wagging and whipping their tails around, very briefly. It usually happened when one of them was bruxing away and getting scritches or rubs from one of us, so it seems to be a happy tail wag.

My boys do this on occasion, as well. Russell does it more than Stanley, and it is almost always when they are really excited about something and ready to tackle each other (or me). Sometimes they do it when I scratch their backs, too.

That's just about the most adorable thing I ever heard. ^.^ Rats really are like little dogs, aren't they?

Heh heh, yep, they can be like little dogs for sure! I always try to explain to people what rats are like and I end up being at a loss to describe how complex they are. I usually end up saying, "They are like little tiny human children/monkey/squirrel/dog, all wrapped up into a beautiful package".

Extreme emotion causes the tail wag...loving some scritches or nerves or even fear can cause it. What did his eyes look like? relaxed or wide open?

That sounds kinda cool. ^-^ I hope my little buck will get that happy with me. For now I will have to be happy with him sleeping in my hoodie pocket and grinding his teeth.

Well if he is sleeping in your hoodie and grinding his teeth, he is bruxing, which means if he is relaxed, then bruxing is a sign of contentment.

Lilspaz, good point about tail wagging and tail whipping. Yes, I remember that this can be something a rat does if they are angry or upset/afraid. It does depend on the situation. The few times my boys did it was always when they were looking half asleep, on their side, getting their tummies scritched.

Tail wagging is usually not something you will see...I have had so many rats but very few would tail wag. Even less would lip smack instead of bruxxing. Lip smackers melt my heart

I missed your question lilspaz. He was alert if I recall. His body language wasn't stiff and he wasn't bug eyed. Who knows?
