Weird Myths

I thought it would be a fun thread to post some weird myths or things you heard about rats.

One I heard was that if you pick up a rat with cold hands, the rat will have a heart attack.Someone told me this many yrs ago, before I even had pet rats.I believed it for awhile too and was paranoid when I got my first rats that my hands were "too cold".

Sure, the rat won't nessicarily like or enjoy cold hands, but it will not die of a heart attack.

What are some you heard?
Did you believe them (before you got pet rats)?

I have heard that a rat can chew through 1/4 inch of solid steel before (like a thick drain pipe). Don't think I believe that at all though since steel is harder than teeth.. I've heard this over and over again from people, tv, and movies and junk so I think it is a popular idea.

When I first got rats my mother told me I could catch a terrible disease and die just from being around their poo. There are many variations but I guess one of the myths I hear most is just that they are absolutely infested with disease. And then if you have 1 rat that gets sick and dies everyone thinks they were right all along. They say "see I told you it was diseased!" Yea it had a respiratory infection not the plague.

When I was little (like 7-8) I heard a lot that rats and mice didn't had bones, and that's why they could fit through tiny spaces. I believed it back then, but then my science class corrected that myth.

When Chloe was first born, people told me I had to get rid of my rats too, because they would spread dieseas and sickness to the baby or bite her.She is 4 today and LOVES rats and not once did she get sick or botten by a rat!

Yeah, for me it's just that they carry diseases. Another common misconception is that they eat their babies, which I guess is true to an extent. They don't eat them just because you touch them though.

I was in the pet store today and seen this product for "wet tail" in hamsters and on the label it said suitable for other animals that get "wet tail" - rats, mice and guinea pigs.

I was like "HUH!?".Hahahaha.
Rats DO NOT get "wet tail".
They can get diarrehea, but it is not "wet tail".

many people fear rats and think they are dirty aggressive animals..so when I actually read a book by a rat owner I was shocked at how far fetched people's misconceptions about rats really were

I thought wet tail was diarrhea caused sometimes by bacteria so antibiotics and probiotics was the cure for it, and hamsters were very susceptible and sometimes other rodents got it as well, so you could treat them..although it's not as serious with them as it is with hamsters

Hmmm I havent really heard any myths but I know that alot of my family views rats as nasty sewer creatures who carry the Pleague. Even my parents say they have adapted to harsh conditions and I keep telling them though, "These are domesticated rats mom, they are alot different then wild ones."
