whats wrong with my rat?

this morning my rat started making this light squeaking. His name is Melvin, he is usually a very quiet rat, never really makes any noise at all. So this concerned me and I went to check on him. he is moving quite slowly and is shuddering a bit. He looks like he wants to throw up. The noises he is making sounds like he is in pain. He keeps scratching at his head. He is still eating and drinking water. I don't know what could this be, as i can't find anything related in searches. If anyone knows what might be wrong please comment. thanks Melvin is a wonderful part of our family and we want to make sure he is ok.

When you say he looks like he wants to throw up is he retching?

He sounds like he could be choking or has a sudden URI (upper respiratory infection)...is he making any sounds when he breathes?

To the world you are only one person, to your rat you are the World

I would definitely get an appointment as soon as possible with your local small animal vet to get Melvin checked out. Keep us posted and let us know what happens.

Yes, please describe more in detail the types of sounds he is making. If it is a gurgling sound or a chirping sound, he most likely has a respiratory infection and will need to be treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. In general, though, if you notice your rat acting out of character, it's a good idea to take him in to see the vet.
