Cost wise ... let's see.

Initial startup probably runs about like this:

Cage - $80-$150
Food - $10-$20 (depending on which brand and how much)
Bedding - $5-$15 (again depending which kind, how much)
Hay - $7-15 (type, how much again)
Water Bottle - $3-$10
Dust bath - $5-$10
Container for bath - $3-$10
Chin - $80-$100 (standard grey, more for mutation colors)
Toys - $5-$40 (I spoil mine rotten ...)

My suggestion is research, research, research. I have a pretty lengthy care section on my site, some of it written by me, some of it from Christi's old site but you may want to check it out!

Mutations can start at about $125.00 for a hetero beige and go up to as much as $350.00 for a homo ebony, Prices depend on the breeder that you are working with. There is higher priced mutations.

I would agree with what was said above. I am a new chinnie mom myself, and now we have 5, all from the same breeder of course, ours ranged from $60 (standard grey) to $168 (pink white) with a $65 discount, because we had taken 2 of 3 brothers from one litter, so the breeder gave us a nice discount.
As for their food and such, we get great deals, on their food, hay, and bedding from our local feed store. I wish you luck in your decision, and will also agree that "Research" is the best thing when it comes to Chins. As I am learning more and more each day.
