Hello! New chin!

Greetings Everyone!

I have barely ever talked on this forum so none of you really know me. This is because i didn't have a chinchilla and felt i had no personal knowledge/experiences to share. However, now i have just taken in a chinchilla who was being sold through craigslist because the owner was unable to take care of him any long.

His name is Gizmo, Giz for short. And he is a gorgeous Black Velvet. His coloring make him look like he has light grey strips sometimes. right now he's still pretty timid from the moving experience but i think with some time he will warm up.

I have been waiting a year to get a chinchilla. i wanted to be sure i was in a position to take care of him as well as have enough time to do enough research to know what i was doing. ^^ This forum has answered so many of my questions just looking through threads. So thank you all for all your help during my prep time.

my pictures aren't the best because i need a better camera but they are the best i got of him and i wanted to show you guys a picture.

Congrats on your new chin

Your guy isn't a black velvet though. I can't tell you if there is any velvet in him, but he's an ebony. All black/all dark if the pictures show his colour correctly

The black velvet has a dark/black back, lighter sides and an all white belly. The face is covered with a "black mask" and they have white rings around the ears.

my pictures like i said are not the greatest. The previous owner who got him from a breeder in Maryland said he's black velvet. he looks black in my pictures but he has what you could call an undercoat of a very light grey. his belly is a lot lighter than it looks.
if he's not black velvet in reality what would that classify him as?

i will try to post better pictures of him someday when i have a better camera. my pictures do him no justice.

He's ebony.
Ebony is what you call animals with colour on their belly.
You can divide ebony into 3-4 groups, because the gene that gives them colour on the belly, and makes them light to very dark acts a bit different than the normal gene. It's not bound to two allels, but can have (in theory) infinitive allels.

The groups would be:
Light, medium, dark/black, all dark/all black

Try googling black velvet and ebony chinchilla, and look at the pictures.
