Lonely?

So my wonderful Hailey likes to stare at my boyfriend and myself and seems a little sad lately. Does she need another chin for a companion? More toys? Bigger cage? She just looks sad.

The staring is usually a form of trance they go into when they feel safe. Basically she is resting, like sleeping, but awake. I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, before I spend more money on another chin, is there anything I can do to make sure she is not lonely? I want her to be happy and have fun in her cage and out. But she barks when she is out and free and she "trances" when she is in her cage. Confused! I want a happy Hailey! Are there cage toys for her???

Wood hanging toys and chew toys are good for chinchillas. Or maybe a wheel? There are some sites online that offer them. Usually lots of play/out time is enough for a lonely chinchilla. I had one chin for 6 years before I got another and he was fine.

Here are some good sites:

You could try giving her a "chin sized" stuffed animal. Minus whiskers tags and tails (cut them off) and see if she will cuddle with it, that might help is she is lonely. Also remember it can take months to put two chins together. They are territorial, and you would need two cages at first until they get used to each other. (Which could possibly not happen)
