Angry ma and pa petstore mistreating chins

My buddy Kayla, who lives in fayetteville, was telling me about this pet store there called 'All about pets' that mistreats their chins. She said that they house males and females of the same litter together, even though the male could impregnate his sisters. They also have treats mixed in with their food and their bath house is too small for them to flip, so they end up sleeping there. She even told the owners that the chins would get sick and they could get each other pregnant and she didn't care! That's sick. Isn't there someone you could complain too?

Really all that you can do is call your local SPCA or animal control bureau, but they usually won't do anything unless they're in dirty conditions without food/water. Minimal care is all they care about. A written letter to the company may or may not help. Unfortunately there just isn't a whole lot of regulation out there for the pet stores in how they care for the animals.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I mean, it's one thing to not care for them properly, it's another to NOT CARE that they are improperly cared for. That's what makes me mad. . . I don't know much about chinchillas, because mine aren't old enough yet to take home, but can't alot of treats give them diabetes? And is premature breeding and inbreeding harmful to chinchillas?

In Illinois the Ag department is the one that inspects pet stores.

See if you can get a hold of care sheet and take it into them. Many pet stores are happy to rectify the problem if you give them solid reasons why they need to. Be polite and ask to speak to the owner or the manager and explain your concerns. It never hurts to try tackling them before you report them.
