Sick Chin

I have a eight year old female chin. Beautiful beige color, fantastic mom and great pet.
She has always had bad reactions to stress. Since change bothers her badly we do not move her cage and other things like that. Her reactions include shaking, and inablilty to move.
Yesterday, she was hesitant to take her weekly bath. This was the first indication something was wrong. After her bath she likes to close her eyes and put her face in the sun. She did not do this and went straight back to her coffee can.
Last night she was sleeping in their pee spot. I tried to give her a raisin-she refused. She was shaking and then began to grind her teeth. She grinded on her teeth for a couple hours. She was also having trouble moving. This morning she is alittle better. Went back to her coffee can and ate a couple sunflower seeds. She is still having episodes of shaking. I also not seen her drink anything since yesterday morning. She may possibly be pregnant.
Does anyone have any ideas?
There is not a vet that deals with chinchillas anywhere close.

I live in High Point, NC. We have called all the vets in the area-no luck. The first one said yes he could take care of them-he was wrong. He told us she was had diarriea and in heat. Turned out she was constipated. He then told us he had only taken care of one other chin. The second over dosed a hurt chin with narcotics and killed him. After the post the vet told me he was a she-yeah right! He frequently had hair rings that we had to pull off.
Her teeth look ok. Nice and dark. I believe after watching her all day that she is constipated. But she will not take a raisin or figs. We also tried mom but she would not take it. Can't blame her it is nasty!
She normally would not turn down either a raisin or a fig.

I take all of my chinchillas to Dr. Powers at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Huntersville, NC (just north of Charlotte). She's wonderful and I won't go anywhere else. You can learn a bit more about the practice at http://www.carolinavet.com and get phone numbers and directions. I know it's probably quite a ways to drive but she sounds as if she's doing quite poorly. If you can't find someone else, I would consider taking your chin to see her. MapQuest said it's about an hour and a half drive.

Best of luck.

Stephanie

Thank you!
I will be calling them.
Dustie is acting some better today. She was eating some hay this morning. Still very grouchy! No shaking or tooth grinding.
There is more poop in the cage today. It is kind of hard to tell which chin it is from, however it is more where she was sleeping. I tried to give her a raisin - and no go.
I did leave several in the cage, along with a couple of dried figs. They are all gone. But Ben could have eaten them. He is a little piggy-but skinny.
Thank you so much! I will keep you informed.

If Raleigh is closer, you can also call Dr. Dan Johnson at Avian and Exotic Animal Care
919-844-9166
www.avianandexotic.com
Dr. Dan is highly specialized with Chinchillas and I know of several awsome breeders that go to him. My own exotics vet recommends him highly for anything serious that has to do with my chins!

Jade thank you so much for telling me about Dr Powers!!! She was great with Dusty-even when she made a terrible mess on the floor!
Dusty has had a miscarriage (most likely) The cells inside her are decaying. I did not opt for having her spayed today. I hope she can expell it and get better. I would prefer to have her hubby neutered as to having her spayed.
Even though she is not out of the woods yet, I feel so much better since we went in.
Thank you again!!

You're more than welcome! I honestly will not go anywhere else.

I do hope that the round of meds will help her to get better! I would have a lot of faith in Dr. Powers' skills as a doctor if you wound up having to spay her, however. Good luck with Dusty!

She is doing great! Running around and acting like herself again. We had a trust issue-she did not like her meds-and would not take any treats from us. We had to lay them down and leave the area for her to eat them. Last night she finally took her raisin from me.

So now it is time to get her hubby fixed. He is a handfull and will hate us for it! He has a small problem with strangers.

Thanks for asking how she is!!
