Having trouble with pan training

I have an approx. 4 year old ferret that has a little problem with going potty in the pan. The litter box is in a corner next to my door, which is part of the problem. I tried moving the box, but he went on the floor (which, by the way, is carpet). The box is easy to get into, has low sides, but he goes on the floor next to the box instead of in it. If i'm in the room, he'll go in the box to get his treat, but when i'm gone he goes on the floor. I've tried rewards, punishments (spraying water in his face), and everything I can think of, but I can't be there all the time. I've had to put a sheet of plexiglass on the floor so he doesn't poo in the carpet, but it looks very nasty. Anyone have any suggestions to what I should do? Thanks!

Ferrets definitely have a mind of their own. I am not sure they can be completely litter trained. What type of litter substrate are you using?
Our Toffee does use her litter pan always when in her cage, but if left out to her own devices for any length of time she almost always leaves a "present" in one of our corners. She seems to prefer going on the tile floor rather than the carpet so that is not so bad.
I wonder if anyone else has any suggestions for you as I really haven't been able to get over this obstacle myself.
