Insulinoma information

I know that as ferrets get older this is a VERY common problem in ferrets so I thought I would share this link with you fellow ferret owners. It is deffinately worth putting in your favorite places for future reference should you need it!

Thank you so much for posting this Thread! I just recently got a 3rd ferret from the vet and he has Pancreatic Tumors and I don't really know to much about it and wanted to learn more information.

The ferrets name is Samson and we don't know his age, my guess is 5 years at the least. The vet told us he is blind and has low blood sugar do to the tumors. He will be needing surgery. Right now, we are just seeing if he will get along with our ferrets that we have now. If they do get along, we will most likely keep him and pay for his surgery and any other vet care that he will need. The reason we took him in is because we felt so bad for him, his owner just gave him up and told the vet to put him to sleep. I know that his condition isn't the best, but he still has so much life left in him and I dont' think his tumor is that life threating. So I hope that My fiance and I can provide him a loving home for what years he has got left.

Is your ferret over the age of 3? Have you had his/her blood glucose checked?

At age three you should have a baseline (first time) BG test done. That way you have a number you can compare to if you ferret starts to exibit signs of insulinoma. You'll be glad you did! You might even be surprise by the results.

My ferret Cinnamin the one in my avatar- was diagnosed at work with me on Tuesday with Insulinoma, She will be having the SX done by our new exotics specialist that starts in July, for now shes on insulin, prednisone, and amoxi drops. Shes doing better, but they do come back after Surgery- however sx is an option for some it prolongs a happy healthy life for another 2-3 years. Cinnamin is 7 years old.
