when i got tinker, i didn't know anything about them. i just went to the pet store, held them, and picked tinker. and i must say, i got the best ferret in the history of ferrets by doing that. he's your typical looking ferret, little burglar mask and all. he's a marshall ferret. and i believe bonnie is too. she's never held still long enough for me to check for a tattoo. but i got mine at pet supplies plus. if that's not a right fit for you, i would just look into some other places in your area that have ferrets. i would make sure wherever you get one, is a clean place, with clean cages, and make sure they tell you what kind of food they were feeding them in the store, so they don't get sick from a new food. hope that helped

Just research. You have to find a vet for them, and make sure they get their yearly shots. that's about all I know.

what kind of shots do you get for them yearly mine have only had the imunizations they came with?
I also read somewhere that imunizations could hurt them is this true
(they can be alergic to them)

from what I understand they need distemper and rabies...I don't know about ferrets but dogs need them every year or two.

They need distemper and rabies shots yearly. If they are kits from a petstore they probably have the first series already which is why the vet wasn't talking about immunizations right away. Yes, some ferrets have had bad allergic reactions to the vaccines. You will need to wait in the vet's office at least 20 minutes after the vaccine is given to make sure the ferret is not having a reaction. I would also recommend giving one shot at a time and not both in the same visit for that very reason.
It would be the best if you could rescue one or two from a shelter rather than buying a new kit from a petstore. The rescue would be able to give you lots of information about care and feeding, etc.
