House for hedgie

I am thinking of getting my first pygmy. I have read somewhere that they don't neccesarily have to be housed in a cage. A box, similar to a dog/cat igloo type box would do, with a toilet nearby... Has anyone kept a hedgie this way, giving him a free run of the house?

My hedgie is in a 90gal aquarium. But I did buy a wire dog kennel for medium dogs, I am remodeling it by lining the inside with window screen. But I'm not sure about letting your hedgie run free around the house. Without supervision or boundaries, he/she may get hurt. Petco does have colorful wire fence just a few inches high, your hedgie may be able to climb out. But to roam freely they should have supervision and a closed area to roam.
