I know we have a few other prairie dog people here besides me...How many do you have? Males, females, both? How old? How long have you had them?
I have 2 females, Karmen and Kasey. I've had them for almost 2 years now and I love them dearly!! I think they're one of the most loving pets I've had, although probably the most difficult to get pics of. Karmen tries to climb on the camera and Kasey is a little camera shy (like me ).
Spottypoo, to answer your question.....no, mine have never just bitten "out of the blue." I can usually tell if they're having a bad day and a little grumpy, so I usually don't let them have floor time on those days. The reason I do that is because my one pd gets really angry when it's time to be put back in the cage. She doesn't do that when we just snuggle. They give you some warning if they are grumpy. Mine will chitter or make a barking noise. I have yet to be bitten hard.
I just saw prairie dogs last week for the first time, other than pictures, and when I got home, started doing research into their needs, care, etc. with the intent of getting two myself, and then they had to go and ban them! :mad2: d4:
I've never seen one in person! They are just adorable... those little faces are sooo cute! :lovies:
Are they hard to take care of? What do they eat? What is a "yahoo"??
Deja, they're illegal in the entire continental US right now due to the stupid Monkey Pox outbreak. (I say stupid because the prairie dogs didn't bring the disease to the states. They didn't cause it. An animal imported from Africa and improperly quarantined did. The PDs are just the victims. ) I've wanted one for a long time.
I give mine Timothy hay as their main diet, and they get treats of shredded wheat, very small pieces of apple, carrots, and an occasional piece of fit and trim dog food as a special treat. They are not difficult to take care of at all, they just need extra attention, especially if you only have one. They are very social animals and will literally go insane if they are alone and not given enough attention.
A yahoo is a greeting. It sounds like "eeee ouuu", and it's VERY cute. My one girl, Karmen, is a real talker. She'll yahoo to almost everything I say. They are also very affectionate. I'll come home and snuggle with my girls and they seem to know when I've had a bad day. Karmen has reached up and patted my cheek with her paw more than once as if to say "it's ok mom, we're here for ya!" I can't imagine not having my girls!
Right now they are banned. The people that have them now are allowed to keep them but as far as I know selling them is still banned due to the monkey pox scare. PD's are getting a bad rap and it wasn't even their fault.
Still banned from selling them yes. Oh another really cute sound they make is an err err sound! That is the sound of a very contented pup! Makes me melt when they make that noise. I think they have me wrapped round their little paws!
I have three. They are right around 8 months old, but I've only had them for about two months. Their names are Chuby(cause he's really fat), Squealer(cause he's quite the talker), and biscuit(dunnoo..my sister named that one). They are my first ever PDs and I love them oh so much! I do not know how to sex them, so I am not sure of their sex at this time. The pet shop I got them from had not sexed them, though they said they thought they were all guys. Anyone know how to sex them?
get a book. there are slight differences that they show you in diagrams. Or, you can take them to a vet. I also reccomend getting them spayed/neutered, because prairie dogs are known to get territorial and testy when they are sexually mature.
I used to have four, 2 males 2 females, 2 died but the 2 who are alive are the sweetest critters in the world. I hope they will soom mate and I will have more. They are such wonderful pets so friendly and personalities that melt my heart. I wish they would get rid of that stupid ban. You can get assult weapons much easier than prairie dogs. So how many people were killed by a prairie dog?

I am new to this site.
I have 4 PD babies -
Harry Sally Ditto & Jasper.
& 2 Degus - Spongebob & Patrick.
They are all about 3 years old,
Ditto & Jasper were 'rescues' from a lady
who was not able to take proper care of
them, I cannot now imagine my life without
them....
Lisa&gang :blob3:
Oh Pixie, how I envy you. I wish my two had mated, but they didn't. I love them so much that the idea I may never be able to have another prairie dog again when mine do die breaks my heart.
I live in a city, they are always inside. I'd be too scared that someone might let them loose and they'd be hit by a car or truck, or some sicko would torture them to death.
Your homepage is beautiful. I'm the one who should be ashamed. I only speak English and I'm not so great at that either. We can thank U.S. public education. I've had to try to teach myself at times.
I am impressed with the fact that you do so well with English. That's superior European education. I've always admire Europe for being so open and liberal. We are so far behind over here. Looks like with George II in the Whitehouse for four more years we will go further backwards.
Hi poochie.
thanks for your kind words about my homepage if there is somthing you want to know on it please e mail me then I tranlate it for you.
Thanks for your kind words
Here in europe we have to talk/whrite english to talk to the outside. When we are a verry small country as we are we are depentning on english. Me specially bacuse I get many info about my hoppy on the internet, and becuse I have a lot of contackt i Germany. But i do bette talk English then whriting it.
I understand your messages very well. Lots of people over here can't spell either, and I am lucky to have spell check on my computer, and I keep a huge dictionary next to my computer as well. I forget sometimes how to spell and I use either one to help me.
As for your beautiful web site, I apologize, I don't understand a word. But it is lovely to look at. I'd hate to ask you to go through so much trouble to translate all of it to me.
Thankyou, Casper. As you know I love prairie dogs, I have two , one male, Moe and one female, Tallulah. I had two others who died. I'm still heartbroken over losing them. I used to have a female Eastern Gray Squirrel named Nibbles who came to me as a baby, but I let her go because she wanted to go. I was sad, but that's what she wanted.
I also had a male Eastern Gray Squirrel I called Jingles. He was aggresive so I couldn't hold him after he learned to eat on his own. I let him go also.
I also have two cats indoor of course, too many cars around. I've had them longer than my prairie dogs.
I love most animals and hate to see them mistreated by humans who should know better. Life can be cruel enough as it is for the wildlife without cruel humans getting involved.
I made a copy of your other thread from breeding. I will send it to my two friends along with your email address. One is the co-author I mentioned to lambelly the other used to be very active on Paw-talk. Both are good people who care very much about prairie dogs as well as other wildlife as I do. We are very concerned about the slaughtering of the prairie dogs in the west. Some of the things they do is sickening. If only the FDA would lift that stupid ban against owning prairie dogs. There's no reason for it.
Hey Poochie Lover!
I have three prairie dogs and two of them I just picked up last week from someone who had not held them or taken them out of the cage in over a year! She tryed to find a home for them last year but changed her mind at the last minute. The little girl Ginger jumps at the cage and chitters and blows at me!! The little boy Teddy just smiles when you talk to him, but that makes Ginger really mad and she attacks him. I'm thinking of separating them so I can try to start bonding with Teddy. They are both neutered. My pd Scooter I've had since a little bb. He's so sweet and loving!
He's over two years old and I have not had him fixed yet. I could not find a vet in this area. Now I'm getting a female and I'm praying I can mate them. Did you ever have bb's? Write back! God Bless!!! Cande
Sounds like Ginger doesn't like you yet. Try feeding her some special treats by hand. Poor kids haven't been played with? At least they are fixed - so happily no major rut.
I have 3 - Dallas, Houston & Peanut. And 2 Richardson Ground Squirrels, a Ferret, 6 Guinea Pigs, 1 Hamster, 1 Bunny, 2 dogs and 4 cats.
Hey Donna!
Can you explain to me how these threads work? It's confusing to me for some reason. I'm use to the other pd forums and they are not like paw-talk. There you get all the post on your e-mail and you can answer them or not. I mostly do alot of reading just to learn all I can about prairie dogs.
where it says 128 unread post, do you start there or do I just go to prairie dog discussion? I would mostly like to talk to other prairie dog owners. Some of the post are very old. I guess I just don't know the best place to look.
Thanks for replying to my e-mail! Yes, you are right Ginger does not like me at all!! She has taken a treat from me though. If she sees me with the treats she won't jump at the cage and chitter but if I'm not holding those treats, she would like to eat me up! ha! She's not to happy right now, going to a new home, with strangers. My prairie dog is scared of her!! He runs from the room if he sees her in the cage. Sounds like you have a house full!! I use to have so many pets but slowly over the years I've lost them and havent gotton anymore. I have a poodle too! I had her mom and Dad but they are gone now and I had a prairie dog for 6 yrs that died of odontoma. I did everything wrong with her becaause the pet shop told me what to do and they had no idea how to take care of pd's. I would love to have a RGS. They look alot like pd's don't they? I've heard they aren't as loving and they don't like to be held and cuddled the way pd's do. I just got home from an oil painting class and I'm beat so I'm going to go for now.
Take care! God Bless! Cande
