This may sound silly, but I need to know

Besides owning three wonderful Prairie Dogs I own two cats and gave my cats catnip which got on my fingertips. When I went near my Prairie Dogs' cage they apparently smelled the catnip and seemed very interested in it, but didn't touch them because I wasn't sure if it was safe for them.

Does anyone know if it's safe to allow Prairie Dogs to taste or even sniff Catnip?

Id say yes because there is a special "relaxation" food for rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs and degus that has catnip in it. Ive also read other stuff that says that it is safe for those animals as well. Those animals are sort of similar to PD's.
I bought some catnip and want to see how my PDs like it. So far, they are not interested.

My older, more cautious PD isn't interested by it. My younger, adventurous one ate it right away but didn't act any differently. I'm pretty positive only cats are affected physiologically by the smell and or consumption.

One of my cats that I recently took in doesn't respond to catnip at all. Of course he was abandoned and then badly abused for some time. It took me weeks to get him to trust me and follow me home and even enter my three seasons room.

He's very affectionate to me and scolds me when I don't go to see him in my three seasons room, and lately he's actually been playful. He's come a long, long way from the terrified cat I first met.

Why would catnip be toxic to any animal?

I didn't want to risk my P.D.'s well being. I know hat cedar will kill P.D.'s even though it doesn't seem to affect other animals, so I had to ask.

Cedar shavings for bedding is bad for any rodent.....we found that out the hard way when we had pet rats.

Thank you Cranky1 I didn't know that.

I keep hearing about Cedarside that supposed to kill all kinds of bugs and I am afraid to use it on my cats as I have a Prairie Dog.

Two days ago my Tallulah died, she was ten years old. She could be nasty if I interrupted her on something she wanted to do and she did bite me a few times, but I still miss her.
