what to do about constant itching

My prairy dag neutered male is 6,5 years old now.He only sleeps in a cage the rest of the day he is out in my living room and kitchen. You can really see he is getting old. He is a lot thinner than he used to be. At the moment he is slowly getting new fur but it is itching that much that he bites himself and scatches all day. He has several little wounds which he openes everytime they are starting to heal. Does anyone know what you can do about it? he eats and drinks enough. if you cuddle with him he doesn'T scratch, but it is of course imposible to cuddle him 24 hours a day.

id recommed getting some liquid flea and mite deterrent, my hamsters had this same problem.
After a few days of applying it the itching stop.
