Smart, cute, and unconventional, the Vietnamese pot-bellied pig was the en vogue exotic pet of the 1990s, fetching up to $1,500.

Fast-forward to the new millennium: the pigs have fallen hard and fast in popularity, although not necessarily in population.

In fact, there are almost as many abandoned animal shelters, or "pig sanctuaries," set up specifically to care for the once-trendy creatures, as there are registered pot-bellied pig breeders in the United States.
