Streaked tenrec - HEMICENTETES SEMISPINOSUS

Possibly Endangered

Class: Animals with Milk Glands (Mammalia)
Subclass: True Mammals (Eutheria)
Order: Insect Eaters (Insectivora)
Family: Tenrecidas.

The Name "Tenrec": "Tenrec" is from the Madagascar Malagasy word "tandraka."

Description: A small insectivore with long snout and limbs, and a vestigial tail, the streaked tenrec has black fur with yellow longitudinal stripes dorsally, and light beneath. It has scattered quills, some barbed and detachable. Head and body length is 5 to 6.5", and it weighs about 7 oz.

Tenrecs are sooo cute! (ok, it's in a wierd, oddball kinda way, but still cute!)

Apparently these guys have some barbs under the fluff that makes handling a bit more of a challenge than with a hedgehog or the other tenrec! In captivity, they eat a diet that is almost 100% earthworms, so that is a bit of a challenge, too!
