Accidentally cut off whisker

Snow had a piece of matted fur on his chin and I was carefully cutting it off. But I accidentally cut off a whisker with it and he flinched. So I looked it up and found out that whiskers actually had nerve endings in them. I hadn't know that before, and I feel absolutely horrible. Will he be ok? How much do you think it hurts them?

Whiskers do not have nerves in them. They are simply long, thick hairs but their follicles differ from those of regular hair. Whisker follicles contain what is called a blood sinus which makes an animal able to feel movement of the whisker as it pushes on the follicle. That's how they use their whiskers to "feel" things.

Your bun is fine, he is not in pain. The whisker should grow back eventually.

Thanks, I feel better now. It's just that he flinched when it happened, so I got pretty worried that it hurt him, and then I read online somewhere that the whiskers have nerve endings. I won't even cut his nails, (I get the vet to do them), because of nerve endings and fear of hurting him.

the reason why he flinched is he could feel the whisker being moved. Not from pain just a reaction from it moving. It will grow back.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Snow is doing fine. I'm just overly paranoid when it comes to my pets LOL!
