Adding a third rabbit- help!

I am really interested in adopting another bunny but i need some help on deciding what sex of bunny I should adopt. I have two female adult rabbits right now that I just got last week from the shelter (Mena 6 1/2 yrs Spayed and Asia 3 yrs has not been spayed yet) they are from different families and dont get along from what I can tell so I need to bond them. Do I need to spay Asia before attempting to bond them? The shelter said they would pay for her to be spayed.

And besides that, should I try to bond these two females together first and then get the third bunny or would it be easier to get a third bunny and bond all three bunnies all at once. And also, should the third bunny be a female or male, baby or adult?

I have read some info on rabbit bonding but I would like a more specific answer. Any insight would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Yes you should spay Asia before bonding. Rabbits should always be spayed/neutered prior to bonding attempts. Not being spayed usually makes them more aggressive and territorial and harder to bond with another rabbit. Also I have heard of people who bonded before getting their rabbits fixed, and when they got them fixed they didn't get along anymore so the bonding process had to be started all over again.

If you want to try for a trio, I would say your best chance is probably to get a neutered male and bond all 3 of them at once. There is no guarantee that they will all get along though, unfortunately. Bunnies can be picky with who that get alone with sometimes. If you can, try calling the shelter and asking if you can take your girls on some bunny dates to meet some other rabbits and see who they get along with.

Have you ever bonded rabbits before? How do the females react to each other now? Trios can be difficult. I have a trio, it took me around 3 months to bond them and that was with numerous short bonding sessions every day.

As Dragonrain said, your best bet is probably going to be a neutered male, and to try to do all three at once. Ideally, you need to find a rabbit rescue in your area and ask to do some bunny dating and for some support during the process. Also, be prepared for the long haul, sometimes bonding can take months.

Thanks for the replies. I have had bunnies before but have never bonded them (the bunnies I had were siblings). So far when I put Mena and Asia side by side in their seperate cages Asia smooshes her face against Menas cage and Mena responds by scratching back. Asia doesnt seem to care at all and she just keeps her face pressed- I have to to pull their cages apart.

Their personalities are polar opposites- Mena is passive, shy and nervous and Asia is very playful, fearless, and a little mischievous. They are both very sweet and affectionate. I'm hoping Asia will settle down once she is spayed!

The bunny dating sounds like a great idea, I will definitely look into after Asia is spayed.
