Unhappy cannibalism

My boyfriend's rabbit had babies yesterday. This was her first litter. There were 4 stillborn out of 9 kits. One was outside of the nestbox and the mother had been apparently eating it. There was another one in the box that the mother had also bitten. The other three were fine, but two have died either last night or this morning.

My question is, could we have done something wrong or was she just confused and didn't know what to do? I've raised rabbits before, but none of mine ever did this, so I'm at a loss to figure out what happened.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Awww...sorry for your loss...

I am not an expert on bunnies...but maybe there was something wrong with the kits that you didn't know. Many animals will eat their young if they are sick or injured. And you mentioned some were stillborn.

I once had a mouse that had babies and a couple were stillborn. She ended up eating her whole litter. So maybe there was something wrong??

But also some animals, if they are new to motherhood...may eat their young due to stress, cravin protein...etc...

I have heard that about gerbils too, and my above is edited all the babies died in the last litter but they weren't eaten or anything just born to soon. They eat thier young for protien too I have read, I give my gerbils milworms occasionally and when pregnant a few times more so that won't happen
