Help Italian Rabbits!

The rescue I volunteer for was contacted by a rescue in Italy - please read the email and help if you can! Warning - the video might not be for everybody ....
-----Original Message-----

Hi everybody, I write from Italy.

I am member of a non-profit association called "La Collina dei Conigli"
(www.lacollinadeico nigli.net) which offers a shelter to abandoned rabbits,
rats, mice and other small animals.

We have been working for the last two years in a small town, Faenza, near
Ravenna. There, in a small Park, called "Parco Bucci", people use to abandon
their bunnies, thinking that they will survive. We have been monitoring the
situation, rescue the animals and find them new families.

Suddenly, at the beginning of this year, the Mayor of Faenza gave order to
catch all the remaining rabbits. They have been grouped all together into a
small fence, some of them died during the captures and others are killing
each other in the fence!!

You can see here a video: http://it.youtube. com/watch? v=fp3daroo7LM

We want to know where the bunnies are, how many of them were captured (more
than 100 are missing!!), WHAT THE MAYOR WANTS TO DO WITH THEM.

Please help us, send your protests!! They do not expect an international
interest about the situation, we need to keep them under continuous
pressure!

You can send your messages to the Mayor (faxes are better because some of
the e-mail addresses have been blocked):

[email protected] faenza.ra. it
Fax +39 0546 691031 or +39 0546 691169 or +39 0546 691169

to the President of the Ravenna District:

[email protected] a.ra.it

fax +39 054434388 or +39 0544258014

Local papers:

Il Resto del Carlino
e-mail: [email protected] ilcarlino. net
Corriere Romagna - Edizione Faenza e Lugo Fax +39 0546 27150 e-mail
[email protected] gna.it La Voce di Romagna Fax +39 0546 662679
e-mail: [email protected] gna.com

You can write in English, even short messages like "stop the rabbit
persecution" are enough.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

There have been issues with not being able to make contact with anyone regarding these rabbits in Italy - phones, fax machines, emails being blocked. Here is another way to make them hear your voice! Please try the email below...

Hi everyone,

I have read a bit more on the internet about this story and these poor little rabbits reallly need our help.

I tried to fax a letter to the Mayor of Faenza using the indicated fax number (correct international number: 011-39-546-691031) , however, the fax machine does not reply. (I am wondering if they have turned off that number to avoid getting any letters??)

Anyway, I found below link, where you can send an email directly to the Mayor of Faenza:

http://www.comune. faenza.ra. it/contenuti/ index.php? t=scuola&ref=12

It works great. The boxes are in Italian, in the following order: Name, First Name, Street, City, Province/Country, phone number, e-mail address.

Under "messagio" you may type your text, then simply press "Conferma". After that another screen will appear showing you the text you are going to send. Press "Spedisci" and done it is. The next screen "Informazioni salvate, grazie" is the confirmation that your email went through.

Here is the message I have sent:

Re: Parco Bucci

Egregio Signor Claudio Casadio, Sindaco di Faenza
It is with great sadness that we have learned here in Canada about the capture and deportation of the bunnies from Parco Bucci.

The majority of the over 100 bunnies which are missing had been sterilized, cared for, fed and looked after by the association “La Collina Dei Congili”.

Please let us know where these bunnies are. Rabbits are highly sensitive to pain and trauma and so we are very concerned about their well being.

Therefore, we kindly ask you to ensure that the bunnies will be returned as soon as possible to the place where they were captured, so that the association “la Collina Dei Congili” gets a chance to find loving homes for them.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards,

i just successfully sent a reply. Not a good one but here it is:

I write with a deep and heavy weight upon my shoulders this afternoon upon learning about the capture of rabbits roaming "Parco Bucci". From what I have read there is an organization ,"La Collina dei Conigli" who have been monitering the situation of the released former-pet rabbits and rescuing then re-homing them. It is with intense sadness and one which I do not understand why you and your workers are capturing them and interfering with good intention. I wish to recieve information on what it is you are doing with the rabits you catch.
Rabbits are sensitive animals with complex emotions and brittle bones resulting in death, depression, trauma, broken bones, and numerous other casualties once chased and captured.Once in the holding pens which I assume you keep these animals can fight and kill each other adding to the stress they are already burdended with.
I would like to understand your motives for causing this trouble on a population of rabbits. In my opinion you would fare better by assisting the organization “La Collina Dei Congili” by helping to humanely catch, sterilize and re-home these rabbits.
Best regards, Thanks for taking the time to read my plea,
Amanda

That's very nice of you. It's been very hard getting in touch with the government there. It can be so frustrating sometimes trying to get people to understand that rabbits are sensitive and loving creatures - especially in a country where a lot of people see them as a meal

True that! I just did a huge photo shoot with my girls tonight and cannot even begin to comprehend why one would want to harm these creatures! Akina cuddled up to me and napped, Acacia binkied everywhere with so much contained happy that this Italian thing just depresses me.
