Bantam Rooster

Hello everyone,
I just bought a house that "came" with a little red Bantam rooster. He pretty much owns and patrols the backyard. I noticed that his (thumb) nail (or whatever the rooster equivalent is called) is seriously long and the poor guy has trouble walking. He has to lift his feet up to avoid tripping over his nail. Can I clip his nails? And if so with what? Any suggestions would be most welcomed.

I believe they are called spurs and they usually are quite long. Can you post a pic? That would give me a better idea of whether or not something should be done about it.

BTW, to the forum! Don't forget to post in the introductions section.

bantam rooster

Scarlette,
Thank you for your reply and I will get a photo to you as soon as I can. Will try for tomorrow. I also heard that the previous homeowner bred the little guy for fighting & hence the long spurs. (although he seems quite docile and friendly)

We had a bantam rooster that had his spurs grown back into his leg. He was like this when we got him. Hubby clipped them, then had to pull the ingrown part out of his leg. He was doing just fine when we gave him to my sister-in-law.
Don't know if this was the right thing to do or not, but it worked on him.

Dear Debbie,
thank you so very much for getting back to me. I really appreciate your suggestion. The little guy ran away last week and although some kids saw him walking on the sidewalk, I have not been able to track him down. I put out posters in the neighbor hood, hoping that someone will find him, a lot of people on the street have chickens, etc and he may have joined another flock somewhere. Thanks again for your thoughtful reply and all you folks have been very accomodating and helpful!
Truly,
Kerstin
