Question Are birds 'handed'?

Do birds normally show a preference for one side or the other?

My budgie, Beekle, seems to always perch on the left side of things. He prefers the left curtain rail, the left of the lounge mirror. He has a choice of two windows one at each end of the room and he always goes for the one on his left as he approaches.

He prefers the right of my laptop's screen but perches on it facing me which would make it the left for him. I'm also very glad he prefers to be facing me

When he grabs his toy mirror to give it a good talking to he grabs it with his left foot.

Yes, birds (parrots) tend to be left footed. Birds who eat with their feet will almost always show preference to holding their food with their left foot.

Parrots can be either Left, Right or Ambidextrous footed. We have a poll going on another bird board and so far there are more right footed then left footed birds. We've done polls in the past on this and it's usually about 50/50.

That's funny! I've never really paid much attention to Carmen's preference until this thread.

She uses both but prefers the right.

I've got a right talon male and a left talon female.....

I wonder if it has anything to do with the humans that handled them most when they were young? Nikki was raised with a right handed family and is left footed.... Nikko was raised his first year by a left handed man and is right footed.... hmmmmm
