Cool Captain Sweets - 5 weeks old

I took these pix earlier this week, and I swear he's changed a bunch since Monday. Definitely more wing feathers. And on Sunday he had two little red tail feathers and now he has 6. I got out my scale tonight - he weighs 521 grams (or 18.4 oz - birds, like chins & others, are usually weighed in grams). It will be interesting to see what he tops out at.

Presenting Captain Sweets:

wow it must be neat to have a baby birdie in the house. Can't wait to hear what words he learns. How old are they when they start talking? Or you can teach them to start talking?

Cool

Just this a.m. he was making more "bird" type sounds than baby sounds. I've heard of some Grays that talk as early as 6 weeks.

You guys will definitely know when he says his first word!!

(I keep repeating to him "I'm Mama's Sweets" hoping that he'll learn that.)

Cool

I'm gonna have him DNA sexed when he gets a bit older - sometimes I call him "her" because I'm so sure he's a boy. And instead of Pretty Boy or Pretty Girl we're saying Pretty Bird. Trying to raise this one right!!

I think I am gonna take a trip to florida and kidnapp him! He is so cute. And putting him next to the cell phone he looks small but his feet look even bigger. He is a Congo right? Which means he will actually be pretty big.

Hey how bout some new pictures of Moji?!

Cool

Liz - they are like human babies in that at this point in life they eat, sleep, and poop. Then they grow to about the mentality of a two year old and stay there!

Dena, I'll get some of Moji soon. MOJI IS A GIRL!!! I was surprised. I took her yesterday to get nails and wings done and the guy at the bird store was telling me that with the senegals the males are green all the way down their belly while the female has white around her vent. There is also an opening between her pelvic bones big enough to lay your finger in. Interesting knowledge - but now I won't be surprised if Sweets turns out to be a girl. (Working hard on Pretty Bird, Mama's Bird, etc.)

Congos are the biggest of the Gray family - and he is from exceptionally large parents. Some people at the bird store had one with them - I forgot the age - but it was fully feathered and not even as big as Sweets is now.

I bought new toys for Moji, Frosty and Pip. Rawhide strips with a big bead at the bottom and calcium balls. Within an hour Moji had no more calcium balls in her. That African blood is destructive!
He is big enough now that I can't pick him up with one hand - takes two hands to handle a whopper!!

Wow! I can't believe how much he (or she) has changed in such a short time! Teach him to say......well, nevermind.
