Cool Drum Rolllllllllll

Presenting the New Captain Sweets. We think it's male but not sure - no offense Capn, but I figured for the bird the name can go either way!!

This "baby" is only 3 weeks old is incredibly big. And what a lover already!

Cool

Not as good a picture - he'd already gone to bed for the night - but I thought you "big bird" people would appreciate the size of the feet on this baby. If he grows into them I'll never need a Macaw to have a big bird!!

Cool

Considering the fact that he's three weeks old and doesn't even have a feather to call his own he's not too bad!! I have to use both hands to pick him up; I'll get the gram scale out tomorrow and keep up with his weight. I had three to choose from - one was the baby and was smaller, one already had attitude (growled at me) and this one just snuggled. I'm excited about him.

Now if I can just find another place to put a cage. . . . .

Capn, I'd never think of you as awkward and nervous!! Maybe you should grow more feathers!

Cool

I have found that when it comes to the "dough babies" (as his stage is called) people either love 'em or think they are absolutely gross. Obviously I'm in the first group! I just love to watch how they change every single time you get them out and feed him.

I haven't seen his parents but have been told that they are huge by Congo standards. So we fully expect him to grow into those clodhoppers!!

I dunno - I think he's adorable, but I'd be so afraid I'd hurt him. Baby birds always make me think they need to go back in and cook a little longer LOL

I'm not familiar with that type of bird but he still seems big! His feet are HUGE!

Cool

African Grays are pretty much the top of the bird heap when it comes to intelligence and vocabulary. You may have seen a bird on TV named Alex who can identify colors, shapes, materials, etc. Alex is a Timneh Gray; the Timneh is in the same family as my new little Congo but they are a slightly smaller bird.

I'm so excited over this guy I can hardly stand it. I know what you mean, Jodi. I've been handling these small guys for all the months (the Senegal, the 'tiel, the parrotlet) now suddenly I have this HUGE thing that feels kind of like a big wad of warm play doh!

But so far he is showing great attitude - a problem with some grays - and I swear he can already tell me (the food source) from Bubba (the fun guy).

Will keep you posted on pix!
