Arrow Ducks

I was at Tule Springs down here in Vegas, one of the only places with water and real grass down here in this desert, and there are ducks all over the place. While walking along the trail with my three brothers, we came across and egg and about 10 feet away there was a mother settled over a pretty big nestful. Most of the ducks have 1-4 ducklings out there, but there had to be 7 here. Anyway, I was pretty sure we weren't to touch the egg and try and give it back to her or bring it home; one because it's illegal and two because we're not about to step into nature's course. But is there any reason she rejected it? Too many eggs, maybe? Could she have lost it - she was on a hill. I was just a bit curious as to why it would be all alone on the path. I wasn't sure if ducks knew that too many was too many.

If the duck senses that the egg is not fertile or if it is abnormal, she will push it out of the nest. It sounds like all the other eggs had hatched, so most likely it was a non-fertile one.
