Aquaponics good for fish?

Husband and I will be looking for a new house in the near distant future. I have always wanted a pond and absolutely love to garden. Then I found out about aquaponics. I have heard great things about it being good for plants but nothing about its effects on fish. Apparently it filters the water but I'm not sure about anything else.

For anyone that doesn't know, aquaponics is a closed system that uses fish water/waste to water plants. The waste water from the plants is supposedly filtered and added back into the fish pond. I'd like a carp pond (goldfish and koi) for most of my outdoor veggies and possibly an African cichlid aquarium supporting some herbs.
