Shrimp can be housed with bettas but some bettas will eat the shrimp. Because of that, I would try ghost shrimp since they rarely cost more than a dollar (they cost 25 cents here). They're fairly hardy and easy to find. As long as you have good water quality, you could keep four or five. Just make sure there are plenty of hiding spots--they really like plants.
Cherry shrimp would also work, but they cost more.
