Changing Substrate?

Well I have now taken over the big 28.73 gallon aquarium in our family room I want to change the substate. Right now its bright purple stuff that my parents picked out years ago and it is very ugly if you've seen pictures of it you have to agree.

Right now the tank has tetras and cories and I'm going to a South American tank. I'm thinking sand, but how much and how to I change without sending the tank into a cycle again?

I would maybe just take out most of the gravel, but leave some in UNDER the sand...towards the back where you won't even be able to tell. That way you don't lose all of your bacteria at once . Remember, a good amount lives in the filter, so you shouldn't completely destroy the cycle.

By the way, consider black sand. It looks amazing in the kind of set-up you're describing, and will really bring out the best colors in the tetras . It's believed that many tetra species, such as neons, prefer darker substrate.
