Cleaning Gravel

is there a vacuum that filters the water and then puts the water back in?

There is a vaccum type thing, but it isn't really a vaccum. Generally when you do that you have to add fresh water. I only vaccum the gravel when i'm doing my 25% water change

We have sand in our tank but I'm sure that you could use the same method on gravel. We do 10-15% water changes every week. We use a little siphon to suck any debris off of the sand and also agitate it slightly to get anything that has snuck below the surface. It does a really great job of keeping the tank clean. You can pick up the siphons pretty much anywhere (I think even Wal-Mart has them).

There is a syphon that works with you sink faucet and it does vacuum and then redeposits new water its called "the Python" it comes in a 25' and a 50' and they sell extensions. Its great for when you have bigger tanks but you do need to have it in some distance of a sink.

Here is a link to Petco with the whole page of syphons and gravel cleaners. The Python is near the middle, a little pricey but many people swear by it. It also lists any special pieces that are available to make sure it works with your faucet.
