fish stores

hi guys
i was wondering why is it when you walk into most pet stores tons of fish are cramed into one quite small tank but then when you go to buy them they ask what tank size you have they will say its to small even know its is most probably bigger than the one all those fish are in at the moment.
for instance the pet shop has about 10 ruby sharks (almost fully grown) in a tank thats about 35 litres but when you go to buy one even though your tank is bigger than theres they may say its to small.
please help here.

Because their tanks are not meant for permanant housing. The fish are only in there for a short time not the rest of their lives *L*

They will sit there until they are sold, usally not too long. Or if not moved, my LFS moves them to a different store. Different locale, diffent people, another chance at moving them.

LFs do not buy fish on the thought of housing them fulltime, they buy them to move them onto the public.

also bear in mind that many fish shops' tanks are on a system, so that 40L tank is connected to several hundred liters of water, that are likely cleaned with a huge amount of filtration and regular, automatic water-changes.
