How to spruce up a goldfish "tank"

We brought the pond goldfish in for the winter and put them in the basement in a preformed pond insert. We feel bad for them because they are in a black plastic borning container. Jay and I wanted to spruce it up for them. I wanted things to bring in some color but not take up too much room. Jay wanted plants. What would be good for gold fish that they could nibble on but not totally destroy? Any other ideas on how to make their winter home more homey?

Water Sprite is a hardy, floating plant that will reproduce so fast the goldfish shouldn't be able to do that much damage if you get enough.

You could try hornwort and anacharis, too. Just leave them floating so they grow faster.

The only thing is I don't know how the lighting is where the fish are...all plants need at least some light.

Right now the poor fish only have the normal bulbs that are used in a house on. We are trying to figure out how to put another full spectrum type of light on them. I am so glad you said that about the plants. I would have never thought about light for them until they started to die! Yet I have everyone one of my house plants in windows. I really shouldn't have plants. I just wind up killing them! I am much better with 4 legged critters.
