Im starting an aqaurium

My hamster Luna passed away about a week ago. My mom doesn't want anymore hamsters for a while, so I asked her if I could make her cage into a little aquarium. Her cage was a ten gallon fish tank. I have to take a sample of the water to the pet store that we go to near my house. The owner, who im friendly with said he wants to test the water to make sure its safe for fish, then i have to get a filter and a heater and gravel, ect. Any suggestions of what type of fish I should start off with? Ive been thinking of getting a couple of angelfish, but I heard they're aggressive fish , is that true?

Guppies and platties are good beginner fish.

You're sure it was a tank made for fish, right? There's a difference between regular tanks and aquariums...the former can easily crack if filled with water. Just figured I'd warn you!

I wouldn't get angelfish anyways because you can't keep them in such a small tank . You'll want to go for fish around two inches or under...or possibly one bigger one. White cloud minnows, neon tetras, fancy guppies, and cory cats are my favorites for a tank that size. Bettas and platies are awesome too.

Oh, and I made a sticky in this section on cycling an aquarium . So if you don't know much about starting an aquarium I'd read it. Please remember not to buy fish right away. That seems to be the biggest mistake new aquarists make.

I agree your tank is too small for angels but a nice size for a small community tank. A small group of tetras would be nice, maybe with something like a Betta as the crowning glory

i thought that once you use a tank for fuzzies, you ca'nt go back to water because the caulking sealant soaks in the ammonia from urine??

Yeah, normally you can't. That's why her water sample tested unsafe.

I know there is a way to clean the tank that can make it safe but I personally don't risk it.
