need help!

so its been 3wks since my 65gal tank has been running...and i have run into some problems....

i get 5watts per gallon...so i think that is descent for that aquarium...its 24in tall...so im hoping that its getting enough light

i have noticed that two of my "amazon leafed" plants are starting to have the edges of their leaves turn yellow...my guess is that i should add some fertilizer tabs under their roots?? is it not enough CO2??? even with all the fish in the tank??.......this seriously depresses me

Aquatistsist, huh?

Amazon Swords generally don't need a ton of CO2, in my experience. Nor do they require a ton of lighting. They are usually very hardy plants. But yes, you may need to use a fertilizer. The tablets that go under the roots are good. I use liquid fertilizer called FloraPride...it's a great product. It doesn't sound like they aren't getting enough food but rather they are missing a nutrient like iron. So I would start using fertilizers and maybe add some liquid trace elements. I know SeaChem has a line of products for plants and they have a bunch of supplements.

What substrate are you using and are you using any supplements right now?

its not quite an amazon sword, it has oval shaped leaves..those are hard to grow any suggestions...sorry i couldnt think of how to describe the plant
and the edges are turning yellow..

Do you know the scientific name? Since I'm not sure what plant you mean.

Unless perhaps you meant a regular Sword Plant or "Echinodorus cordifolius"? Those have leaves more like what you are describing. I've never kept them but like most sword plants they need a good substrate. If you are using regular gravel then you definately need to be using fertilizer and liquid vitamins.

The reason I suggested using liquid iron and other supplements was because the leaves turning yellow often means they are lacking something. What you are describing doesn't really sound like the plant isn't getting the proper CO2. If the plant isn't growing much, though, then that could be another issue.

I still am wondering what substrate/fertilizer you are using right now...? With sword plants they are important.

yep thats the plant, i normally never have problems but this is a new tank, normally i dont need fertilizer in my established tanks bc the feces go into the gravel with time and provide the plants with sufficient nutrients...however here its clear they need the fertilizer...what kind do you use? the plant isnt growing much if any, im sure the yellow indicates a lack of nutrients...should i get liquid or the tablet kind that you could stick into the gravel?
