Suddenly Shy Fishy..?

One of my female guppies has suddenly become very shy.. Usually when i turn on the light they will all come of for breakfast and i usually count them while they eat.. there 8 in that tank, all females.. but the other day i noticed one shot down to the bottom when i came up to the tank... i sat there for a few mins to see if she would come up but she seemed to be really freaking out down there. so i fed the others there flakes and dropped a sinking pellet in hoping she would calm down and have something to nibble then i left them alone awhile.. so I'm not sure if she ate anything or not.. but later i came to look at them again and she went and hid again.. So i dunno why she would suddenly become so scared when someones near the tank? none of them used to be. they all usually beg for food anytime someone even steps toward the tank..

Today i turned the light on but didn't feed them right away, i stepped away from the tank awhile and watched to see when she came up to the top.. then i slowly opened the top of the tank.. she went down a little but only about halfway... then i put some food in alittle at a time, staying as far back from the tank as i can.. and she slowly made her way up to eat some.. So she is eating.. shes swimming ok and everything.. shes just scared? Anyone have any ideas why she would suddenly get so skittish?

Test your water (not with strips, make sure you use the chemical tests)...it could be nitrite poisoning.

Parasites and internal infections are other concerns; sometimes fish act erratically/nervously when they have them. It's because the fish is in pain but doesn't understand why.

I wouldn't worry too much yet, though . Just keep an eye on her and get the water tested.

How would you know if its parasites?? or just the fish being skittish. My pleco and my "zebra" botia (the two largest fish in the tank) are two big scaredy cats!

Technically you can't say for sure without testing them but if a fish suddenly starts acting nervous for no reason then it can be a sign of parasites. If other symptoms start popping up that can't be explained (like weight loss) then internal parasites are probably the cause.

If your fish normally act nervous then there's probably nothing wrong .
