Scrambled? Over-easy? How about just raw?

I get a lot of people asking me about snakes, but one of the questions that always comes up is what kind of snakes don't have to be fed mice or rats? There are a few different kinds that can be found readily in captivity.

I fed Cadbury, my egg-eating snake, the other day and figured I'd take some pictures. She's surprisingly patient with me, even while trying to eat. The whole process took about five minutes, when not being harassed by me with a camera it's usually faster. Maybe two minutes or so.

Mmm, egg.

Om, nom nom.

Okay, it's in...

*crack* *slurp*

She sits in her corner, singing herself to sleep.
Wrapped in all of the promises, that no one seems to keep.

Okay... done... *hork*

Not much left.

What's funny, is that after she was done, I looked under her hide box and found these:

She sits in her corner, singing herself to sleep.

Wow, that is so interesting! I never knew they spit the shell out when they are done.

lol how long before you get the remains? And does the shell crack inside her? And once broken, whats her protection from abrasions and cuts? Chicken eggs here, do you mix it up and provide different species eggs or provide supplements??

They have a fast metabolism compared to many other kinds of snakes... so things flow through pretty fast.

They have an adaptation to the underside of their spine that allows them to flex their muscles, and juts into the egg, cracking it and collapsing it. Then they just keep flexing and wiggling to squeeze out everything.

If you look at the egg, it's covered in saliva, which makes the shell slip easily, but the way they collapse the egg in on itself also helps them avoid being poked by any shards of shell.

I feed her mainly fresh chicken eggs these days, but I give her quail eggs sometimes when they're available. Quail eggs are pretty small for her now. She eats 3 or 4 chicken eggs a week, or 10 or so quail eggs. I don't supplement with anything else.

She sits in her corner, singing herself to sleep.
