Chameleon with swollen eye

I just got these guys last week and I have notice that the male has a swollen eye. They were in boxes made of wood and they were very nasty. I think he might have hurt his eye on a stick that was in there. They had sticks that were to small in the boxes. I got new tanks for them and bought new branches for them and got a water fall going in both tanks, lights and heat lamps for them. I have cleaned his eye with warm water and it looks alot better today. Any advice on what else I can do? My Vet isn't to good with chameleons. We leave in the country and Vets out here are far and few between.

Pammiedrew,

saw your message and I am scouring information about camelions now. I will get back to you when I get some advice. I think that what you have done so far is good. Way to go.

Here is what I found:

You are going to have to make some changes in your setups for these chams, eye problems or not. Chams don't thrive in tanks...they need better air exchange than tanks allow. You will need screen sided cages. Waterfalls won't do much for chams either. They probably won't drink from them at all, they are great sources of bacteria and mold, won't raise the air humidity much, and are a pain to keep clean. You will need live potted plants for the cages. Plants will provide some humidity, privacy, and climbing areas. Provide water by hand spraying with hot water. Don't rely on any type of dish or fountain. You'll also need to FIND a vet to deal with the health problems chams often end up with sooner or later. Do it before you need it, believe me. For basic cham care here are some good sites to visit at the very least: www.adcham.com, www.chameleonjournals.com, www.chameleonnews.com.

you might also use saline solution from a dropper and a q-tip, see the post down below about the little shard that was bothering someone else's cham's eye. good luck!

that was my panther. if you do this, warm up the saline a bit and rub the q-tip in a circular motion (lightly). your cham will likely 'lean' against the q-tip and puff out it's eye. if your cham has a true infection, antibiotics will likely be necessary. my cham actually had something in his eye (see below). good luck.

I hope this advice helps you. Let us know how your little guy does and post some pics if you can.

Ok...I got the side screen tanks, and I did away with the waterfall. His eye looks alot better. My vet friend came out here last night and from what he can tell, Dude's eye is not infected but had something in it. Most likely dirt from the tree branches that were in his old box. So he washed it out and put some drops in it and he has it opened and the swelling is going down.....yeah!

Now what kind of plants are good in his home? What temp. do I need to keep his home?

This is all new to me. I am the lady that takes all the unwanted animals around here, and I haven't had time to get any info on these guys. So any help will be great right now.

Thanks for all your help, Lizgirl.

First off, what kind of chamelion's are we talking here. You will probably want to try and duplicate the environment they are in. If you know their species name, you can use that to look up specifics on them. Just type that name in a search engine and you should get several pages of information. Google is my fave. If you don't know the species name, just try the commercial name.

I'll help you look, but I first need to know who (what type of Chamelion) I am looking for.

hehehehe....I forgot to tell you what type they are....lol.:o

They are veiled Chameleons. I have searched several different sites and I get three different things. I have no idea which one to go with. One said , waterfall and one said misting thing, so I am really confused about these guys. I want them to be happy and I can't seem to get it togther.

What a beautiful lizard!

I would go for the misting thing. Waterfalls look nice, but I don't hink they really increase the humidity and that is what we are going for.

Here is another idea about how to increase humidity.
http://centralpets.com/phpscripts/se....php?Story=461

Here is a care sheet with info on specific humidity ranges for your chamelion.
http://www.geocities.com/chameleoncreatures/veiled.html

Here is an article from Reptiles Magazine. I trust this magazine since they update their info regularly.
http://www.kingsnake.com/rockymounta.../RMHveiled.htm

One thing that I see on all of these care sheets is the warning to not house chamelion's together.

Again keep us posted. I hope to one day have chamelions of my own. Right now I'm too busy figuring out how to raise and care for my own child.
