Nice looking geckos! They are all gorgeous and I love your setup.

What does it mean when the sex is "proven"?

Great looks geckos!! Walter is my favorite.

When the female lays fertile eggs that means she is proven. When the male can impregnate a female he is proven.

Thanks! I suspected it might be something about breeding. Is it common for geckos to be infertile?

Proven means that they have laid eggs that have hatched and grown into healthy adults. Sorry!!! I guess I should have explained...

Anyway, Walter has been a forum hottie for a bit...he is very social and demands to be taken out several times a day.. This is a shot of him fully fired up...(stress or nightime color)

It is not as common for them to be infertile, but very common to be low on calcium or vitamins that cause the eggs to have weak or poorly calcified shell matrix's.

These eggs tend to leak and pull apart as they grow. (A healthy egg should be perfectly smooth and white, almost powder coated to the eye.) When this starts to happen with a female, a cooling season (dropped temperatures to simulate onset of winter/ less than 60 degrees) is recommended to get her fully healthy before allowing her to warm, again. (72-80 degrees)

A female will continue to lay 2 eggs every month for up to a year from one single copulation...so breeding should be approached with a grain of salt.

If a female should not get proper husbandry during this time she can suffer a calcium crash or develop Metabolic Bone Disease which can kill her at best and cause pain and suffering at worst. After that you have to be prepared for 20 hatchlings, per female, per year....$$$$

Most breeders break even, that is why they refer to it as a hobby and not a trade...lol!!!
