ear infection

For the past week i have noticed that my puppy Messi was shaking his head and itching at his ear, i cleaned out his ear and it was wet and draining so i set up an appointment at the vet.

at the vet the vet looked in his ears and said he didn't see any mites but it would be weird if he got an infection with out mites as he is still a puppy. So he squirted in mite meds in his one ear anyway (not both). and gave me Mometamax to put in his ear once a day for 7 days and then once a week until spring.

He didn't clean his ears, or swab them, or anything. I really like this vet but i was kind of surprised that he didn't clean them out or anything. Or treat mites in both ears. I have to put the Mometamax in both ears.

Is this normal?

I had a similar experience with a new vet I was "checking out". Jbeans had a itchy spot on her neck that went moist and nasty overnight. The vet said it was most likely due to an ear infection. They gave her neck a quick shave and sent me off with the same medication.

Perhaps it was a busy day at the office?
