Thumbs down Eating poo??

Why is my little 3.5 month old Maltese eating her own poo?!!! She actually gets upset with me when I take it away from her.

How can I stop this completely disgusting habit?

I know this may not be the way you want to go as far as stopping your puppy from eating it's own poo, but they make a tablet for it.

Here's the link:

The product is called Deter. It's a chewable tablet you give to your dog. It said on the site that it's very effective.

Hope this helps a little bit!

Deter works for some, doesn't work for others. Meat tenderizer (no MSG) is said to work too. Do some research on coprophagia and you should find some info. Good luck!

Sometimes this behavior goes away as the pup gets older and sometimes it becomes a habit. All of my pups have done it at some point and they have all grown out of it.

We've tried the product and it only worked for one of our dogs. What else you can do... right after they poop, immediately praise then distract them with a ball or other toy. Or if they are on a leash, start while praising them, start walking away to keep them from going back and eating it.

If you see Maddy eating her feces, tell her firmly NO and then praise if she leaves it alone.

I would try the pill and the distracting behavior if I were you. Good luck!

Yeah, I've tried saying NO! before and she just laughed at me. DH says I'm not a very convincing disciplinarian -- says I'm too soft. Hrmph.

She's pretty much got peeing on the paper down pat, but has started leaving her poos in front of our toilets!! She has seen/smelled what goes on in there and she thinks she should do the same!! How can I break her of THAT one??

Maybe you can train her to do it IN the toilet???

Because I was born in the South, I'm a Southerner. If I had been born in the North, the West or the Central Plains, I would be just a human being.

I thought of that!! Unfortunately, she's just too small to make it up there.
