Left her alone...

I've read how some of you leave your dogs crated any time that you leave. Which is what Ben and I have been doing. Then I read how others here have also only crated at certain times, and once they felt the dog had gained some trust and respect, would try leaving it out for a little while.

Well.... I'm at the library and have been for about an hour and a half, about to check out a few DVD's and stuff to read, hoping that by the time I get back home, my couch won't be ate, my plants will still be in the window sill, etc. LOL

I'm exaggerating, so don't get me wrong, Putch is a pretty good girl and prefers to play with her big stuffed dog and bear, and I stuffed her kong so she's surely been busy with that...
Just wish me luck! (I suppose I ought to say wish HER luck!)

haha!

good luck! i went through the exact same thing when i moved to the house. i had been gating/crating all the time at the apt. when i moved here i thought, "well, i'll have the doggy door (no accidents) and they'll have the whole yard to be in..." so i tried it and it worked! they are always loose now, even at night. i just have to leave the doggy door open!

We always crate rescues when we aren't home or at night, but with our other two...they were crated for those reasons up until about a year old each. We would leave them out for longer and longer periods and now they are to the point they can be trusted for up to 8 hours alone, and they sleep in the bed with us. Occasionally if a newspaper or magazine is left on the floor, Orion will shred it, but other than that we have no accidents and they are usually asleep in the front window when we get home.
Good luck! You have to start trusting them sometime and building up to it is the best way we've found to go about it
